EASO publishes practical guide on the best interests of the child in asylum procedures

20 February 2019

On 20 February 2019, the European Asylum Support Office (EASO) has published a new practical guide on the best interests of the child in asylum procedures. The aim of this practical guide is to help to identify and highlight the key milestones for the implementation of the best interests of the child. In EASO’s Practical Guide, attention is paid to the situation and rights of separated children and reference is made to the SCEP Statement of Good Practice.

Guidance and support for national authorities This new practical guide aims to provide guidance and support to the competent national authorities on the required guarantees and safeguards which will ensure that the child’s best interests are given primary consideration when making decisions affecting the child in the asylum procedures. Divided in five sections, the document discusses the best interest of the child in general, procedural safeguards, practical guidance how to assess best interest of a child and vulnerability and risks for children. There is also a checklist with the key steps for authorities when making decisions and assessing best interest of a child.
